Sugar cravings are perhaps the most difficult cravings to ignore and whilst avoiding them in the first instance is the best strategy, sometimes you need a few go-to strategies to curb the monster before it gets out of control.
1. Moving Right Along
Go outside for a brisk walk or if you are a runner, then a short sprint will be even better. This serves a two-fold purpose. Firstly, you distance yourself from the food that you are craving. Secondly by moving you are able to release endorphins or “feel good” chemicals in your brain, which can help turn the craving off. If you can’t go outside, a few push ups, body weight squats or any other body weight exercise will also do the trick. Research shows that people who exercise in the morning are less likely to experience sugar cravings throughout the day.
2. Bop to the Beat
We all have a profound emotional response to music. Music is a great way to distract and to provide emotional release. Create a playlist that is designed to be uplifting and that you know you can always rely upon to make you feel good. You will effectively replace the role of sugar in uplifting you.
3. What is it You Really Want
Our craving for sugar can often be disguising other needs. Perhaps you are bored, avoiding a phone call or situation, or you are feeling frustrated and lacking “sweetness” in you life. Knowing the trigger for your sugar craving may be enough to dissipate its strength. Talking to a friend, planning a fun activity or facing that task you are procrastinating about may also assist.
4. Heat it Up
Jump into the shower or bath if you are at home. The water must be hot on the verge of being that it is on the verge of feeling uncomfortable. Stay there for at least 5-10 minutes. When you have come out you are likely to have a very relaxed and almost dazed feeling and the sugar craving will be a distant memory.
5. Change your Focus Away From You
Change your focus to someone who may need your assistance, think about how you might be able to give to someone in need or how you can make someone happy. Phone a friend, make a colleague laugh or just smile. Naturally by focusing on others we take the focus of ourselves and our “neediness” – this might apply to more aspects of our lives than just sugar cravings!
6. Heroic Gymnema
Gymnema sylvestre is a truly heroic herb and is extremely bitter. A few drops of the herb on the tongue makes anything you eat subsequently have not taste at all! So you will derive no pleasure from that sugary delight if gymnema has worked its magic. Ask me about how best to use gymnema as a supplement. It is a powerful pancreatic restorative herb as well as a blood sugar balancer so features in my apothecary!
7. Succumb and Enjoy
If you have tried these strategies and your own and you still cannot shift that craving then sit down, relax and take maximum pleasure in your decadent delight with no subsequent guilt. Life is too short to be consistently depriving yourself ~
